Best places for Sunday lunch in Belgravia
by Cally SquiresFrom the grand surroundings of The Lanesborough’s Grill to live music at Boisdale to classic pub fare at The Alfred Tennyson, we’ve got all the bases covered when it comes to the best places for Sunday lunch in Belgravia.
Boisdale
Sundays at Boisdale means live jazz lunches, with Britain’s Got Talent winner Richard Hadfield on the mic. On the foodie front there’s something for everyone, from a slow roasted loin of rare breed pork with roasties and apple sauce, to Dumfriesshire haggis, buttermilk chicken Milanese and steamed Shetland mussels. Just make sure to leave room for proper puds like fruit crumble with custard, and sticky toffee pudding with Cornish clotted cream.
Amaya
Banish the Sunday scaries with a Michelin-starred meal at Indian restaurant Amaya. One for the non-traditionalists, there’s no roast spuds or Yorkshire puds at this Sunday sitting. Instead, go a la carte and try signature dishes like the chargrilled aubergine tikka, mandarin and goat’s cheese salad and wild tandoori prawns. Or at lunchtime take advantage of the great value platter (£36), which includes seven different plates for those who prefer a little taste of everything.
The Alfred Tennyson
Part of the fabulous Cubitt House trio of Belgravia pubs, which also includes the recently refurbished Orange on Pimlico Road and Thomas Cubitt on Elizabeth Street, The Alfred Tennyson on Motcomb Street is named after the celebrated Victorian poet. This group are rightly proud to wax lyrical about their ethical suppliers, which for their legendary Sunday roasts includes fresh seafood from the Wright Brothers; alongside lamb, chicken and Angus beef from family butcher Walter Rose and Son, Taste Tradition in North Yorkshire and Hannan Meats in Northern Ireland.
Wild by Tart
Wild by Tart, founded by caterers Jemima Jones and Lucy Carr-Ellison, is an elite dining choice any day of the week, with its sweet homeware shop, super seasonal produce and seriously tasty spicy margs. On Sundays the restaurant is open from midday until 3pm, which is just about enough time to work your way through delicious dishes like grilled crispy shiitake mushrooms with aioli and Cornish crab with borlotti beans. The cherry on top? Canine companions are welcome too.
The Orange
The newly revamped Orange public house has two three-course Sunday feasting menus, one with choices of roasted Cotswold chicken or pork belly with sourdough stuffing as the main attraction. The second offers chicken alongside a beef rump with Yorkshire pudding and a punchy horseradish crème fraïche. Vegetarians are catered for with a roasted cauliflower in taleggio sauce. Make it extra indulgent by adding on the Neal’s Yard cheese board with a boozy fruit chutney to finish.
The Jones Family Kitchen
Known for their grass-fed British beef from excellent butchers the Ginger Pig and Aubrey Allen, you’re in good hands when settling in for the Sunday lunch menu at Eccleston Yard’s Jones Family Kitchen. There’s steaks cooked in the Josper charcoal oven, plus classic roasts of chicken and beef sirloin with duck fat potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Don’t miss the signature Jones Family Eccleston Fizz aperitif, made with Dockyard vodka, Pommery champagne, elderflower and mint.
Daylesford Organic
There’s no traditional roast on the menu at Daylesford’s Pimlico Road farm shop and café, but you will find seasonal and organic food from the Bamford’s Gloucestershire and Staffordshire estates on the table. Go for the venison linguine if you crave a nod to Sunday tradition. Or why not stock up on produce to cook up a feast at home? The team can arrange delivery of groceries for those who live locally.
The Star Tavern
Sundays at The Star Tavern are love or hate, when it comes to roast potatoes in any case. The pub’s Marmite-roasted spuds are worth travelling to try. And if the famous roasties don’t tickle your fancy, a pint by the fire at this friendly (dogs are welcome too) establishment on pretty cobbled Belgrave West Mews certainly ticks our cosy boxes.
The Lanesborough Grill
The Lanesborough’s flagship Grill restaurant is headed up by chef Shay Cooper, who champions modern British cookery, sourcing as seasonally and locally as possible. It was always going to be classic when it comes to Sunday lunch at this hotel. Think roast sirloin of Hereford beef, Cornish cod and a mouth-wateringly good Beef Wellington. At £75 per person for three courses, this is the place to go to splurge, especially when splashing out for the optional wire pairing.
The Thomas Cubitt
A unique Georgian institution, The Thomas Cubitt is a handsome pub on Belgravia's Elizabeth Street, a short stroll from Victoria station. The pub's Sunday roast menu features four mouthwatering options: Angus beef rump, lamb shoulder, chicken or pork belly, served with roast potatoes, roast carrots and hispi cabbage. Tables of four or more can have the roast served family-style for £28 per person. There are also vegetarian options on the menu for non-meat eaters.
Motcombs restaurant
Just a short walk from Knightsbridge tube station, Motcombs Restaurant is a Belgravia institution. Every Sunday, the restaurant offers a traditional roast rib of beef with all the trimmings: Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, brocolli, carrots and homemade gravy.
